I'm curious on the community opinion of what kind of ladders we should support.

1v1? 2v2? 4v4? Some other esoteric combinations? Keep in mind I see the galactic war playing a part in things like interclan battles.

I believe you should just do all the basic ladder maybe up to 5, and allow players have custom rules that can allow more than that amount maybe?

oh boy!!! first off all three you suggested then 20 v 20 because it will force people to take it seriously and that's the ultimate troll (no but, seriously speaking I talk to people about this two-week long 20v20 game idea all the time, I take it seriously already)

If you've got the time and the tech, I can't see why including as many different ladders as the community wants would be a bad thing.
Gaming communities tend to be to an extent self-regulating, in that if one ladder is a bit eccentric and not representative of skill people will ignore your ranking on it. 1v1 2v2 etc is probably a good place to start though.

The obvious answer from my part: I want 1v1. If possible on mirrored maps, as at least for now random maps often are pretty unbalanced spawn-wise.

I think it should be up to 4v4 when you are matched with random people and possibly even more when you have premade teams (or a clan war).

I think all of these would be essential

    Ranked:
    1v1 / 2v2 / 3v3 /4v4

    Unranked:
    1v1/ 2v2/ 3v3/ 4v4 / Free For All

An unranked version of the ladder games is good if you don't want to be serious in the game but still want to play against people you don't know.

There isn't much of a point in having every combo of 1v1/2v2/3v3/4v4/5v5/6v6 and such. (duh)

    I'd say 1v1, 2v2, 5v5.

And maybe as the game matures, it'd be kick *** if we could get something stupid large like 10v10. But that's dependent on game and community growth.

Something that's incredibly important though is seasons.

Sure, have an all time ladder or a yearly ladder or something.

But to make the ladder interesting for new players, it needs to reset every 3 months max.

    1 v 1 and 2 v 2 for personal ranked.

    3 v 3, 5 v 5, 10 v 10 for clan ranked or team ranked.

IMO any larger than 2 v 2 and you can start to get into situations of people getting carried. 2 v 2 it's obv still possible but even more so in 3 v 3 and up. People will offer "elo" boosting and people will buy it.

i didn't even point out that there should be unranked versions of each ranked because of how ludicrously obvious and inhenrent it seemed to me.
so for precaution's sake : there should be unranked versions of each ranked

I'd personally love to see a single-planet only option for ladder. For those who like shorter games or have weak computers. Some kind of ranked option for that would be awesome.

    1v1, 2v2, ... 5v5

and within the ladders allow some multi faction ladder, like 1v1v1v1, 2v2v2v2, 3v3v3v3, etc

Regarding galactic war, it would be cool if there was 4 planets in a solar system and one side controlled 1 or 2 and the other team has the same... and the goal was to own the most planets in a set amount of time.. or destroy the commanders... Or somthing completely different.

Sort of like Control points in TF2 but with planets.

Just food for thought, not expecting this to be an option.

I would like to say that from my experience in the AirMech community, having more options for ranked play is bad unless you have the community to support it. I would suggest either keeping the options down to a minimum for now, but maybe cycle through the possible options, like 2v2 tues/thurs 3v3 mon/wed 4v4 fri-weekends and always have 1v1.
