Does anyone here remember the movie "The chronicles of Riddick" there was this one prison planet called "Crematoria" which was orbiting a super hot star. As the night reseeded the sun would break over the land, but it was so intense as to create a firestorm that would destroy all who it flowed over.

Here is a pic from the movie

Now my question is would this be possible to implement in PA, because I think the idea of having to keep yourself mobile could be an interesting game mechanic. Opening up such possible strategies as choosing where to build your base, when to abandon it. When to attack your foe's, or can you cut them of from making their escape, and letting the environment take them out for you.

Giving us the ability to set the speed of the planets spin before the start of the match should enable everyone to find a suitable day/night cycle at the pace that they prefer.

You could even invert the idea, so that the sun keeps the planet from freezing, and the oncoming night will freeze everything it touches, This wouldn't necessarily need to destroy your buildings, or fighting forces. But would leave them immobile and vulnerable until the night cycle completes, when they start to thaw out and become active again.

That actually sounds quite entertaining, it'd be great to be having a massive land battle but it turns to night and everything on that side of the planet stops with smaller planes falling out of the sky after their circuits freeze. Or that same land battle gets hit by a firestorm neither player noticed and when you come back to it all you find is kilometers of molten puddles ready to be scavenged.

Though the movie had its issues, the Crematoria bit was pretty awesome. Something like that could probably be made into a mod easily enough.

we have ultimate robots in far future: They have cooling systems for hot days and heating systems for space travel and dark sides of planets. it might be a cool environmental effect for planets that are near to the sun (to have gas explosions going on on the hot side) or planets that are far away (to have freezing lakes, rivers and oceans on the cold side), but nothing more pls

    wut.

Ultimate robots from the future don't have to just break all laws of physics 'just because'.

Heat still needs to be dissipated somehow!

As for the OP, the idea of a planet where half the terrain is burning lava is actually pretty awesome. I imagine a setup where it would only rotate very slowly, so over the course of a game you are reclaiming / rebuilding your base as well as fighting - definitely a new way to experience the battle!

While technically true, the only real effect of heat is that it deals damage and limits DPS output. Both traits can be largely abstracted out of the game, as it is assumed units take care of their own heat concerns.

    The best line;

"This one goes to 11. Petawatts, in this case."

I think it could have a cool enviromental effect but I don't think it should destroy everything in it's path. It would have to much of an game changing effect! At max it could have something like with the ice that it slows down your fire rate and movement speed and during the heat some buildings and units could overheat but there should be buildings that could prevent that so it can be prevented at the cost of energy!

It kind of defeats the purpose of the idea if you make the two extremes of temperature effects on your units the equivalent of what we consider a hot day without air conditioning or a chilly day that makes moving a bit awkward. Perhaps we will have a scale based on how close the planet is to the sun where firestorms are what happens if you put it too close and the extreme cold on the night side will happen when it's too far away.

pretty terrible movie, pretty fantastic idea.

i'd settle for the ability for this to be modded in. so while it doesn't need to be created by uber, i'd like the underlying physics to allow this if possible.

Adding in lots of temperature, overly complex physics and generally half the over "super realism mode" suggestions made here would just get in the way of gameplay and only really serve to annoy people and cause a lot more development time

This game mechanic was introduced on a few Zero-K (a TA derivative) maps - it was widely agreed to be laborious and singularly unfun (once the novelty wore off) to constantly need to adapt your holdings to the terrain.

Maybe as a mod to make an exceptionally rare planet, this might work. But who would place ANYTHING on a planet as dangerous as that when you're turning every asteroid in sight to a extra-large warhead? As entertaining the idea is and the splendid visuals that would go with it, I'd have to disagree. Besides, the focus of this game should be robots blowing each other up and everything around them.
